One for the Road: Drunk Driving since 1900

Don’t drink and drive. It’s a deceptively simple rule, but one that is all too often ignored. And while efforts to eliminate drunk driving have been around as long as automobiles, every movement to keep drunks from driving has hit some alarming bumps in the road. Barron H. Lerner narrates the two strong—and vocal—sides to this debate in the United States: those who argue vehemently …

Mother Against Drunk Driving(madd): is it Neo-prohibitionist?

“Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) was founded in 1980 by Candy Lightner, whose daughter was tragically killed by a drunk driver who was a repeat offender. The goal of MADD was to reduce drunk driving traffic fatalities and the organization has been highly effective in raising public disapproval of drunk driving. The proportion of traffic fatalities that are alcohol-related has dropped dramatically, in part because of MADD’s good efforts. MADD is a single-issue non-profit anti-drunk driving organization in the United States and with a branch in Canada (see MADD Canada). MADD is based in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb of Irving, Texas.

MADD’s Goal: Is it Neo-Prohibitionist?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving stigmatizes light or moderate alcohol consumption, even when it isn’t associated with either being underage or driving. For example:

1. MADD sells a graphic showing two empty glasses of alcohol surrounded by the words assault, drowning, burns, rape and suicide.

2. MADD sells a graphic that equates beer with heroin by depicting a beer bottle as a drug syringe.

3. MADD sells a television ad insisting that “”if you think there’s a difference”" between heroin and alcohol, “”you’re dead wrong.”"

Mothers Against Drunk Driving has clearly become not simply anti-drunk driving or even anti-impaired driving, but anti-alcohol. MADD’s temperance orientation expresses itself in many ways, as seen in Is MADD Neo-Prohibitionist?

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) began with the admirable goal of reducing drunk driving traffic fatalities by educating the nation about the devastation caused by drunk drivers. For the first 15 years, this strategy paid off: MADD’s public relations campaigns played a key role in changing the nation’s attitude about drunk driving, resulting in a huge drop-off in drunk driving deaths. MADD was so successful that it reached its goal for 2000 (to reduce alcohol-related deaths by 20%) in 1997.

MADD’s campaign to make adult beverages more expensive through drastically increased taxes is another major tactic in their war on responsible drinking. MADD says these tax hikes are a way to reduce underage drinking — but lacks real evidence that taxes are more likely to reduce underage drinking than moderate consumption by responsible adults.

MADD founder Candy Lightner has broken ties with the group. In 2002, she told the Washington Times, “[MADD] has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned … I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.”

In the 1980s, MADD had success in helping change public attitudes and laws regarding driving under the influence (DUI). Since 1980 (the year Mothers Against Drunk Driving was founded), alcohol-related traffic fatalities have decreased by about 44 percent, from over 30,000 to under 17,000 and MADD has helped save over 300,000 lives.

Statistics On Drunk Driving Dui

drunk driving statistics in argentina?

I need statistics on dui in Argentina.

You are not the first to look for these stats. You must understand that no all societies are as open as the US. There is no known dependable record of DUI activity in Argentina, but it must be an issue as they are very strict. Their blood alcohol level for a motor vehicle is only .05 and for a motorcycle .02. As I said there is no federal agency charged with compiling the information you need, though there may be reasonable estimates, but these are not found on the internet.

Drunk Driving Awareness Programs

drunk driving awareness programs
Did your high school host this event and did it affect you?

This question is about EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES.

I’m writing a paper on the drunk driving awareness program ‘Every Fifteen Minutes’ for my Public Health 103 class. I recently flew home to participate in my brother’s event, he was the drunk driver, and wanted to know how many people have participated in this and how they felt about it.

I am curious to know:
1. How old you were when you saw this event at your high school?
2. What state is your school in?
3. Did you have your license yet?
4. Did it change your feelings/opinions/personal actions when it came to alcohol and driving?
5. Do you believe this is an effective program for deterring teenagers from drinking and driving?
6. Did you have a role in the program other than a spectator (coordinator, living dead, related to a participant etc)?

Any other comments you have would be great!

Thanks so much for your input. Good luck with school!

1. My high school did something like this every year before the Prom.
2. North Carolina
3. no
4. no, as I never had the desire to experiment with alcohol in the first place – I had some common sense
5. somewhat effective
6. only a spectator, although a couple of the “dead” were acquaintances of mine and none were close friends.

As a social outcast, it didn’t make much difference to me if the “popular” kids were supposed to be dead or if I was the one who was supposed to have been “dead” as hardly anybody would’ve noticed me anyway. This program didn’t have much effect on me, other than strengthening my beliefs in not messing with alcohol, especially after one of our math teachers (Mr. Woody) brought in what was left of his car after a drunk driver plowed into him, nearly paralyzing him. To me, first-hand accounts like Mr. Woody’s are more effective than hearing someone quoting statistics.

Pretty much, its all up to the students themselves. Self-control is there for a reason, yet so many choose to ignore it so they can seem “cool” or more grown-up, which is a crock. If someone wants alcohol badly enough, they’ll find a way to get it. Desperation can do weird things to a person.

That makes me think of a wreck on our property line from last year where some girl had taken her boss’s vehicle from work (along with her boyfriend) and they seemed to be drunk, if not on drugs (or both, as they were coming from the direction of a known meth cook in our town) and were driving way too fast and nearly rolled the boss’s vehicle into a creek and did quite a bit of property damage. The girl driving wasn’t wearing her glasses and she wasn’t licensed and she was paranoid about going to jail and her boyfriend didn’t seem to care. Needless to say, that girl was fired and the boss wasn’t too thrilled about them joyriding in his vehicle when she should have been at work, actually on the clock. As far as I know, they were both charged with vehicle theft and possibly some drug charges, but I haven’t been paying attention to that particular case.

Dui Fatalities

dui fatalities
How much money did the Kennedys pay off Mary Jo Koepechne family?

Read the book by the Kennedy relative who was at the party & was one of the guys who tried to save Mary Jo. It’s one thing to be involved in a tragedy like this, but to leave the scene of the accident and then swim across the water to check into a hotel (to sober up), then show up the next day asking what happened. Doesn’t that give you insight into the liberal icon from Mass? If it were you, me or even Paris Hilton, we would have been arrested for DUI manslaughter, leaving the scene of a fatality & when they discovered Mary Jo survived, for awhile, in an air pocket of the car, it should have been a murder charge, for not summoning help to protect his Walrus carcas from the consequences, anyone but a dirtball Kennedy would have suffered.

The media giving a pass to Kennedy may have been the birth of the “liberal media”. God knows the media is obsessed with those low-lifes (Irish mafia ne’er do wells).

at the time it happened it was rumored to be 2 million.

How long do I have to go to jail?

Last night I was driving and stopped the police because I was speed, and spent three red lights. They found an open bottle of alcohol in my car. This was because about seven police officers and took me there, barefoot, because my shoes were off (it turns out, after me, but I do not remember because I am very drunk) is my friend came and saved me. He was charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving, and even license suspension! "In going to court Friday. If I plead guilty (probably) How long is my time to serve behind bars? and do not tell me how stupid I do not want that I know! By the way, I in Texas is the first time that I was arrested I'm usually never get in trouble

You can get like 30 days in jail and probably many fines in the amount of about 5000, but I recommend you take if a lawyer.
